Obituary for Jean Matilda Gehring (Walther)

Welcomed home safely into the arms of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, January 12th, 2021, at Caressant Care, Courtland with loving family by her side, Jean Matilda (Walther) Gehring formerly of Seres Dr., Hickory Hills, Tillsonburg and RR2 Otterville, in her 97th year. Jean was born in Tillsonburg and lived at the Walther family farm at RR2 Otterville to the late Fred Walther and the late Gertrude (Zimmer) Walther. Predeceased by her husband of 37 years Irvin G. Gehring (1980). Much loved mother and mother-in-law of: Linda (Bob Patterson), Dundas; Les (Bertha) Gehring, RR2 Otterville, and Joan (Gary Carpenter), Delhi. Proud and loving grandma of: Amy, Erica (Dave), Lindsay and Nick (Patti) and their families, and great-grandmother of: Bailey, Jaiden, Dylan and Colton. Survived by a sister Pauline Masecar of Port Townsend, Washington, U.S.A. and the late Art. Also survived by several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces, and great-nephews and cousins. Predeceased by her two infant sons: Richard (1946) and Paul (1947). Also predeceased by a sister Helen Pettigrew (2008) and the late Mitchell; a sister Marjorie (Barrie) (Armstrong) (2014) and late George Barrie and late Harold ‘’Chubb’’ Armstrong; a brother Jack Walther (2016) and late Betty.

Jean was a longtime, almost lifelong resident of Otterville. Jean was a lifelong member of the Otterville United Church and Life Member of the U.C.W. She enjoyed Bible study and taught Sunday School for years at the church. Jean was a life Member of the Sommerville W.I. She was a dedicated member of the Violet Rebekah Lodge, Otterville I.O.D.E. She volunteered at the T.D.M.H. Auxiliary for over 20 years. Family was important to Jean and was her main focus. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and baker who always had special snacks at home ready when the kids came home from school. The family will also remember the great meals and entertaining that Jean did for her friends, family and neighbours. She made beautiful quilts for her grandchildren that they will cherish always.

A Private Family Memorial Service to Celebrate Jean’s Life and Family Legacy to be conducted on Thursday, January 21st, 2021 at 11am in the Maurice J. Verhoeve Funeral Homes - Burial and Cremation Services Inc., Chapel, Tillsonburg (519) 842-4238, by Rev. Pat Cook of the Otterville United Church. Interment follows in the Otterville Cemetery. Memorial donations in Jean’s memory to the ‘’Otterville United Church’’ or to the ‘’Canadian Cancer Society’’ or to the ‘’Purrfect Companions of Norfolk’’ can be made through the www.verhoevefuneralhomes.com website or by cheque.
