Passed away on Thursday, April 9th, 2020, at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, with loving family by her side, Jean Eloise (Hetherington) Waechter, a former resident of Ball Street, Tillsonburg, in her 85th year. Born in Glen Meyer, Ontario, daughter of the late Gordon Hetherington and the late Gladys (Axford) Hetherington. Jean was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt to her family, which she treasured very much. She will be fondly remembered for her incredible cooking and baking abilities, as well as her love for dancing. Jean is reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband and best friend of 60 wonderful years Jerome “Jerry” John Waechter (July 13, 2015). Loving mother and mother-in-law of Deborah Jean (Michael) Stark, of London; Cheryl Anne (Ted) Burton, of Tillsonburg; and Michael (Alison) Waechter, of Simcoe. Proud and loving grandmother of Devon and Jillian Stark. Loved sister of Jay Hetherington (Mary), of Tillsonburg and survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Predeceased by a brother Lee Hetherington (Donna), a twin-sister June (Jim Lowe) and a sister Verna (Don Graydon). Jean was dedicated to her community, working seasonally in tobacco, then later in the office at the Met Store, Tillsonburg. Jerry and Jean were especially dedicated to supporting our local Royal Canadian Legion Br. #153 as part-time stewards and bartenders for twenty-seven years. She also worked in the office at British Leaf Tobacco, Tillsonburg for several years. Jean was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Catholic Women’s League for several years.

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, a private family viewing and visitation has taken place in the MAURICE J. VERHOEVE FUNERAL HOMES – BURIAL AND CREMATION SERVICES INC. Chapel, 262 Broadway Street, Tillsonburg. A Private Family Graveside Service by Rev. Father John Pirt, of St. Mary’s Church followed in the Waechter family plot of the Tillsonburg Cemetery.

On Jean’s tribute page (at www.verhoevefuneralhomes.com), relatives and friends are invited to share their favourite photos, memories, express condolences, send flowers or make memorial donation in honour of Jean to the “Kidney Foundation of Canada” or to the “Canadian Diabetes Association” through the Maurice J. Verhoeve Funeral Homes (519-842-4238), which has been entrusted with all funeral arrangements. Funeral Mass will be held at a later date with details to be announced in the future.

“The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at Cedarview Retirement Home, Woodstock, Harvest Crossing Retirement Community, Tillsonburg, Terrace Lodge, Aylmer and the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, for their remarkable kindness and attentive care of mom.”
