Obituary for Marylin Sorochan

Sorochan, Marylin Theresa (July 31, 1938 - January 1, 2022)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend Marylin Theresa Sorochan. Marylin was constantly surrounded by her loving family during her passing at the Woodstock General Hospital on January 1, 2022. Much loved wife and best friend of Ray Sorochan for 54 years (predeceased) loving mother of Leslie Sorochan (Chris Ruland) of Ancaster, and their children Sara, Grace (predeceased), Evelyn and Tess; loving mother of Lisa Sorochan of Woodstock and daughter Phoebe; loving mother of Rayna Bartlett (Bill Bartlett) of Owen Sound and children Emma and Ben; loving mother of Christopher Sorochan of Woodstock and daughter Katelin. Marylin is survived by her brother Barry Kelly (Lorraine Kelly) and sister, Patricia Molloy (Vince Molloy). Marylin was born in Oshawa where she started her nursing career. Marylin loved the rural area of her childhood. In her life, her happiest days were where she overlooked those open spaces. In Oshawa, Marylin, with her husband Ray began to raise a family. They moved to Woodstock in 1975. Marylin continued her nursing career while also becoming more involved in her faith community at St. Rita’s Parish. She was president of Right to Life and involved in the CWL. A founding member along with her husband Ray, Astrid and John Nordholt, John and Dinphi DeGraaf and Fr. Garry McCarthy were instrumental in establishing a long-standing effective youth ministry in Woodstock. As a Youth Ministry Co-ordinator, she initiated the programs for Junior and Senior Youth Programs as well as the Recruitment and Training of Volunteer leaders. Always anxious to keep up to date with what was going on in this area, she made sure there was ongoing information and education, both for themselves as leaders, for the team, and for the youth group. They organized numerous excursions to conferences and retreats and fun days out of the city. They always saw the best in the kids, and worked tirelessly to bring that to the fore and provide many opportunities for them to shine. She had a big heart for young people, whether relatives, teens of friends, or kids off the street. Her love was genuine, and they responded to it and felt it. Marylin expanded her family to include her “kids” from the youth groups who continued to refer to Marylin and Ray as Mom and Dad well into their adulthood. Marylin and Ray taught the pre-marriage courses, served as readers and eucharistic ministers. Because Marylin wasn’t busy enough, it was during this time that she began her favourite part of her nursing career, teaching at Fanshawe College as well as volunteering as a companion through the Alzheimer’s Society.
In “retirement”, after moving to a little farmhouse in Tillsonburg, Marylin and Ray opened their store, Jewel International Home Mobility. They were partners in business, on the dance floor, in faith, family and love. She was fierce, a doer, so when Ray would call her his “delicate flower” we would laugh. Marylin began volunteering; co-ordinating cooking and serving meals for St. Vincent DePaul Society, while also becoming an active member of the CWL and the Senior’s Choir. It is her friendship with the “Curvey Girls” that she cherished. After her eventual move back to Woodstock, her greatest pleasure was her friendship with these wonderful women.

Marylin’s heart remained in Tillsonburg. “I love being able to look out at these fields everyday” she would say about the view from the little farmhouse kitchen window.

She lifted us up, was so proud of us and loved so hard. We are all better for knowing her.

Everyone who knew Marylin is invited to attend a Celebration of her Life on Thursday, November 10th, 2022, between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m.
