Obituary for Meta Alice Avey (Lazenby)

Avey, Meta Alice (nee Lazenby) R.N. (March 26, 1928 – May 8, 2022)

Passed away, peacefully, at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, our much-loved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Meta Alice (nee Lazenby) Avey R.N., on Sunday, May 8th, 2022, at the age of 94. Meta was born in North Norwich Township, where she attended school in Norwich and lived in Norwich until she married Clarence Avey in 1951 and later moved to Tillsonburg. Meta graduated from Hamilton General Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1959. In later years, she spent 21 years nursing at Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, until she retired and took other duties. She immediately found duties that were a help to others. She was involved with the Adult Literacy Program for several years. She also was a caller on the Rotary Phone Check that contacted persons living alone to make certain they were safe. Through the years she has been a faithful member at First Baptist Church, where she made many lifelong friends. Also, in her retirement years she enjoyed extra time with her dear granddaughter and the family. For many years she belonged to Maple Park Women’s Institute in her neighbourhood and enjoyed the many friendships made there. Physical fitness was important to her, and she kept up exercising, belonging to Aqua-fit and walking regularly (and enjoying it). She enjoyed good health and strength for many years. Many hours were spent and enjoyed knitting afghans and watching BLUE JAYS games!

Meta is predeceased by her husband Clarence Avey (February 23, 2005). Much loved mother and mother-in-law to Diane (Jack Page), of Ingersoll; Russell Avey, of Tillsonburg and always a caring and proud grandmother to Andrea Page (Shaun). Meta is survived by two sisters Nene Lott (late Russell Lott), of Guelph; Nan Lazenby, of London; as well as by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Predeceased by her parents Percy Lazenby and Alva (Duckworth) Lazenby, as well as by two sisters Belle Palmer (late Rettie); Ruth LaFlair (survived by her husband Ron LaFlair, of London).

In keeping with Meta’s expressed wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends, former neighbours, and relatives are invited to attend public visitation on Friday, May 20, 2022, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Maurice J. A funeral service to celebrate Meta’s life and faith will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church (18 Harvest Ave., Tillsonburg), by Rev. Steven Amorin.
