Obituary for Phyllis Mary Helsdon (Bamford)

HELSDON, Phyllis Mary (Bamford) (1927-2021) –

It is with sadness, we the Helsdon family announce the peaceful passing of our much-loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister and friend, Phyllis Mary (Bamford) Helsdon on Wednesday, October 13th, 2021, at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, at the age of 93. Born in Tillsonburg, to the late Joseph and Maude Bamford. Phyllis was a proud member of Courtland United Church and she enjoyed giving back to her church and community by volunteering for over 55 years between the “U&I Club” and the “U.C.W.” Phyllis was a dedicated homemaker and always a caring mother to her three children and devoted grandmother to: (1) James ‘Jim’ Helsdon (Rosemary), of Tillsonburg and their four children, Susan Helsdon-Fisher (John Fisher) (kids Nicole, Rachel, Ryan); Melanie (Ted Toth) (daughter Lauren); Angela Helsdon-Gradish (Steve Gradish) (kids Brayden, Kieran, Ryan, Eryn); Laura Helsdon-Gooder (Jay Gooder). (2) Robert ‘Bob’ Helsdon (Heather), of Oshawa and eight children, Aaron (Franca) (kids Christian, Stefani); Darrin (Angela) (kids Eryka (Brian) [and their child Nora - Phyllis’ great-great-granddaughter], Benjamin, Matthew); Christa (Terry) (kids Abbi, Emily, Lilli, Joshua, Adam); Joshua (Sarah); Tyler (Dustin); Brodie (kids Harper, Wesley); Doug (Val) (kids Brooks, Juliana); Jeff. (3) Lynda (Brian Metcalfe), of Tillsonburg and their daughter Lindsay (Gary) VanLeeuwen (kids Garrett, Austin, Brody). Also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Phyllis is predeceased by her husband of 35 years, James Olds Helsdon (1979), by two brothers Joe Bamford (late Cora), Roy Bamford (late Margaret) and by her sister-in-law Freda Franklin (late Cecil).

In keeping with Phyllis’ expressed wishes, a Traditional Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. in the Tillsonburg Cemetery, 191-193 Simcoe Street, Tillsonburg, by Rev. Ted Smith, of Courtland United Church (*weather permitting* - if inclement weather persists the funeral service will be held in the Maurice J. Verhoeve Funeral Homes Chapel, 262 Broadway, Tillsonburg). All who knew Phyllis are welcomed to attend a public period of visitation on Friday, October 22nd, 2021, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Verhoeve Funeral Homes Chapel, Tillsonburg. All guests must pre-register for an available time slot via Phyllis’ online tribute page at www.verhoevefuneralhomes.com or by calling the funeral home between 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In keeping with Ontario Government Regulations, all attendees must wear a face covering and are asked to maintain social distancing guidelines.
