Passed away, peacefully, after a long and satisfying life, “Through Adversity To The Stars” Royal Canadian Air Force Motto, on Friday, April 17th, 2020, at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, Ret. RCAF Flight Lieutenant Robert L. Cross a resident of Hickory Hills, Tillsonburg since 1991 in his 102nd year. Robert answered Canada’s call during World War II enlisted and served with distinction as RCAF Flight Lieutenant during active duty conditions. Robert was a deeply dedicated Executive Member and Service Officer for the Royal Canadian Legion BR. # 153, Tillsonburg serving all his fellow Service man and fellow Service women as a dedicated Legion Service Officer for several years dealing with Veterans Affairs Canada. He served on all Executive Committees for years. Poppy Fundraising Volunteer, dedicated Sgt-At-Arms, especially at Remembrance Day Parades and several highly dignified Legion Funeral Services. Robert was an RCAF Flight Instructor until 1965. Robert was a volunteer in various capacities with the Tillsonburg Multi Service Centre. Robert’s life growing up on the farm outside of St. Thomas lead to a love of gardening and growing vegetables for his family for many years. He enjoyed traveling with his wife spending many winters in Florida and Arizona. He enjoyed being active, particularly outdoors and always said that the most important thing was always to keep moving. In recent years he became a big fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and was very disappointed their season was suspended this year. His family was the most important thing in his life and he was insistent on celebrating each person’s birthday every year.
Robert was born in St. Thomas to the late George Cross and Mabel (Baker) Cross. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 67 years. RCAF (L.A.W.) Leading Air Woman Barbara Ann (Wilson) Cross (2010). Loving father of Mary MacLeod of Aylmer and late Roderick (2013). Predeceased by his son David Cross (2005) and his son Gordon Cross (2019) who is survived by his wife (daughter-in-law) Alison Cross, Tillsonburg. Predeceased by his sister Mary Hogg (1980) and late Nelson. Predeceased by a brother Howard Cross (2003) and late Agnes. Dearly loved father-in-law of Alison Cross, Tillsonburg and her children who were Robert’s loving grandchildren: Alexander, Thomas, Andrew and Laura. Survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
