Obituary for Theresa Schafer (Engelhardt)

Passed away, peacefully, on Sunday, March 21st, 2021 at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, Theresa Schafer, a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother in her 90th year. Born in Almaskamaras, Hungary, Theresa emigrated with her family to Canada in 1949. She married the love of her life, Joseph, On May 1, 1951 in Delhi. Together with her husband, they farmed tobacco and lived at RR 2 Delhi for 47 years. Theresa loved to work in her vegetable garden and flower beds. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, as well as knitting, crocheting, quilting and needlepoint. Not fond of travelling because of her family’s displacement for four years following World War II, Theresa’s favourite place to be was her home.

Beloved wife of the late Joseph (2016). Loving mother and mother-in-law of Joanne (John) Backus, of Simcoe and Thomas (Linda) Schafer, of Tillsonburg. Proud grandmother of John (Eva) Backus, Jeffrey Backus; Janelle (Cameron) Cluett, Stephen (Alainna) Schafer. Great grandmother of Brock, Liam, Jacob; Carson; Maryn. Survived by her brother-in-law Tony (Carol) Schafer, several nieces, nephews and cousins, and her special cousin, Liz Drotos, who was like a sister to her. Predeceased by her brother Joseph Engelhardt and sister-in-law Maria; sister Veronica Kanyo, brother-in-law Steve; and her sister-in-law Mary Schafer.

Regrettably, due to COVID-related attendance restrictions, visitation on Monday, March 29th, 2021 will be by invitation only from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the Maurice J. Verhoeve Funeral Homes - Burial and Cremation Services Inc. Chapel, 262 Broadway, Tillsonburg (519-842-4238). All guests must bring and wear a face covering and adhere to social distancing guidelines. A Private Funeral Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on March 29th, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Verhoeve Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Fr. Ben Huyge, of St. Mary’s R.C. Church.

Interment follows in the Delhi Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the “Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital Foundation,” or to the “Woodingford Lodge Tillsonburg” (memo: for recreation purposes) can be arranged on Theresa’s online tribute page at www.verhoevefuneralhomes.com.
